How big a dance floor do you need?
Enter your guest count to find the right floor size, then see how big a monogram decal, border, or full floor wrap should be for it. Built on the same numbers rental companies plan with.
Dance floor size calculator
Each square is a 3 by 3 ft floor panel. Orange shows your graphic, drawn to scale.
Planning figures from the rule rental companies use: 4 to 5 square feet per dancer (4.5 here), with 30 to 40% of guests on the floor at once. We make and install the graphic. The floor itself comes from your venue or a rental company, so get their measured size, and their written okay for a removable floor graphic, before design starts. The dance floor decal planning guide has the full timeline.
The floor math
Rental companies plan dance floors at 4 to 5 square feet per dancer, and at any moment roughly 30 to 40% of your guests are on the floor. The calculator uses 4.5 square feet, and the crowd setting picks the percentage.
Portable floors are built from 3 by 3 ft panels, so real floors come in steps of three feet. That is why the calculator rounds up to the next panel size instead of giving you an odd number nobody rents.
| Floor | Area | Holds about | Guests (typical wedding) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 12 ft | 144 sq ft | 32 dancers | up to about 90 |
| 15 × 15 ft | 225 sq ft | 50 dancers | up to about 140 |
| 18 × 18 ft | 324 sq ft | 72 dancers | up to about 205 |
| 21 × 21 ft | 441 sq ft | 98 dancers | up to about 280 |
| 24 × 24 ft | 576 sq ft | 128 dancers | up to about 365 |
Sizing the graphic
A center monogram reads best at about a third of the floor’s width, a little more if you want it to hold up with a crowd standing on it. On a 15 by 15 ft floor that means roughly 4.5 to 6 feet across. The very middle gets stood on all night, so keep fine detail and small text toward the outside of the mark.
Floor film comes on rolls about 54 inches wide, so anything wider than four and a half feet prints in panels that are butt-seamed, with no overlap to catch a heel. A full wrap on a 15 ft floor is four panels.
What we need from you
- The measured floor size from whoever supplies the floor, not the brochure size.
- The venue’s okay in writing for a removable vinyl graphic on the floor.
- Your date and setup window, plus vector artwork if you have it.
We make and install the graphic, and the floor comes from your venue or a rental company. See dance floor decals and wraps for materials and which floors work, or the wedding and event graphics page for signs and lettering to match.

Get a quoteHow big should a dance floor be for 100 guests?
For a typical wedding crowd, about 35 of 100 guests are dancing at the peak, which needs roughly 158 square feet. A 15 by 15 ft floor (225 sq ft) covers that with room to spare, and 12 by 12 ft works for a quieter crowd.
How big should a dance floor be for 150 guests?
About 53 of 150 guests will be dancing at the peak, which needs roughly 239 square feet. That is just past what a 15 by 15 ft floor holds (225 sq ft, about 50 dancers), so plan on 18 by 18 ft if your crowd dances, or keep 15 by 15 if they mostly watch.
How big should a monogram decal be?
About a third of the floor’s width, or up to 40% if you want it to hold up in photos with people standing on it. That works out to 3.5 to 5 ft on a 12 ft floor, 4.5 to 6 ft on a 15 ft floor, and 5.5 to 7 ft on an 18 ft floor.
Do you rent dance floors?
No. We design, print, and install the graphic, and the floor comes from your venue or a rental company. That keeps us focused on doing the graphics properly, and we can work with most floors a venue or rental company provides. See which floors work.
Ready to put your names on the floor?
Send us your venue, date, and floor size, and we will quote the graphic, usually within one business day.
