Dimensional Letters & Logos

Your logo in metal, acrylic, or cast bronze.

Dimensional letters are cut, cast, or formed as real objects, then mounted so they sit off the wall and catch the light. We lay them out to scale on your wall, have them made by a specialist letter and plaque manufacturer, and install them.

What makes a letter dimensional

A dimensional letter is an object, not a print. Every letter, and every piece of your logo, is cut, cast, or formed on its own and mounted to the wall one piece at a time. Hung flush, it reads crisp and architectural. Held off the wall on spacers, it throws a shadow line, and that shadow is what makes a reception wall look permanent instead of temporary.

Everything on this page is non-illuminated: no wiring, no transformer, no electrician. It is the sign you see on lobby walls, in office suites and conference rooms, on restaurant and gym feature walls, and in church and school lobbies.

Seven ways to make them

The material decides the look, where the sign can live, and most of the price. Here is the whole lineup side by side.

Dimensional letter materials compared: look, thickness, and letter height
MaterialLookThickness or depthLetter height
Flat cut metalAluminum, stainless, brass, bronze, copper, or weathering steel1/8 to 1 in (aluminum)1/2 to 46 in
Cast metalPoured aluminum or bronze with a flat, rounded, or prismatic faceUp to 3 in deep4 to 64 in
Fabricated metalHollow stainless or aluminum letters built with sides3/8 to 6 in deep2 to 60 in
Flat cut acrylicClear, colored through, painted, or printed in full color1/8 to 1 1/2 in3/4 to 95 in
Flat cut PVCPainted any color, metallics included1/4 to 1 1/2 in2 to 95 in
LaminatedA thin metal, foil, or acrylic face on an acrylic or foam core1/8 to 3 in1 to 46 in
Formed plasticLight vacuum-formed letters, colored, painted, or chrome1/2 to 2 3/4 in deep4 to 48 in

Heights are per piece. A logo or a long name that runs past them is made in sections. Each material also has a minimum stroke width, so fine lines in a logo get checked on the proof before anything is cut.

Picking the right one

  • Thick letters without the weight? Fabricated metal letters are built hollow with sides up to 6 inches deep, and laminate on foam runs up to 3 inches thick, both far lighter than solid stock of the same depth.
  • Want real metal? Flat cut metal comes in aluminum, stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper, and weathering steel. Cast metal adds rounded and beveled faces. Laminated letters give you the metal look indoors for much less.
  • Need an exact brand color? Painted letters can be matched to a PMS number or a paint brand's color. Full-color printing runs in CMYK, so when the exact shade matters, paint is the safer choice.
  • Big logo, sensible budget? Painted PVC handles large interior logos without the weight or the cost of metal, and it comes with its mounting hardware and pattern.
  • A traditional, institutional look? Cast aluminum or bronze with a rounded or prismatic face is the classic choice in church, school, and civic lobbies.

Mounting: flush, floating, or on a rail

  • Flush studs. Threaded studs on the back of each letter go into holes drilled in the wall. The letter sits tight to the surface with no hardware showing.
  • Studs with spacers. Spacer sleeves on the studs hold the letters off the wall, so they float and cast a shadow. Most reception walls want this.
  • Double-face tape. For lighter letters on a smooth wall, with no holes to patch later.
  • Rails and brackets. Some metal letters can mount to a rail or sit on a bottom angle bracket instead of taking a stud in every letter.

We install stud-mounted letters from a full-size pattern that marks every hole, so the letters land straight and evenly spaced instead of being measured off one at a time. Heavier pieces get anchors and adhesive matched to their weight and to what the wall is made of, and a large or heavy sign gets the wall checked before anything is ordered.

How an order works

  1. Send the logo and the wall. A vector logo if you have one, a photo of the wall with a tape measure in the shot, and roughly how far away people read it from. No vector file? We can redraw it as a quoted add-on.
  2. Mockup and options. We lay the sign out to scale on your wall and quote two or three sizes or materials side by side.
  3. Proof. You approve exact dimensions, colors, thickness, and mounting. Nothing is cut until you do.
  4. Made to order. Production time depends on the material, and we confirm the date with your proof.
  5. Installed. We mount it from the pattern, level and on center.

Scope, plainly

Everything here is for interiors. We don't do exterior dimensional signage: letters on the outside of a building, channel letters, lightboxes, monument signs, and pylons are a different trade with their own permitting, and we would rather say so up front than take the job and hand it off. What we do is the inside of the building: lobby letters and logos, plaques, and ADA room signs, designed here and made by a specialist manufacturer that sells only through sign shops.

Material, letter height, thickness, and the number of pieces drive the cost, so we quote each wall rather than post a number. The pricing guide explains how we quote, or send us your logo and a photo of the wall.

How much do dimensional letters cost?

Material, letter height, thickness, the number of pieces, and the font all move the price. A script logo with fine strokes takes more cutting than a few block letters of the same size. We don't publish prices because every logo and wall is different, but we will quote two or three sizes or materials side by side so you can see the difference. Send your logo and the wall size to start.

Metal, acrylic, or PVC: which should we choose?

Inside, all three work. PVC is the economical way to do a large painted logo. Acrylic adds crisp edges, more color options, and full-color printing. Solid metal is the premium look, and laminated letters give you that look for less. For most lobbies it comes down to budget and the look of the room, and we will price more than one.

Can you do letters on the outside of our building?

Not at the moment. We make and install dimensional letters for interiors: lobbies, offices, conference rooms, and feature walls. Letters on the outside of a building come with city permits and a different kind of install, and we would rather say so up front than take the job and hand it off.

Do the letters light up?

No. Everything we make here is non-illuminated, so there is no wiring and no electrician. For depth without light, mount the letters on spacers so they cast a shadow, or aim an existing light at the wall. Lit channel letters and lightboxes are a different trade, and we will tell you so rather than farm them out.

How long do dimensional letters take?

They are made to order, and production time depends on the material. We confirm the date with your proof. If you are working toward an opening, a move-in, or an inspection, tell us the date when you ask for a quote.

Can you match our brand colors?

Yes. Painted letters come in about 45 standard colors or a custom match to a PMS number or a paint brand's color. Full-color printing runs in CMYK, so paint is the safer route when the exact shade matters. Metal can also stay metal: brushed, polished, or anodized aluminum in clear, champagne, gold, light, medium, or dark bronze, or black.
