What it definitely does
Cuts solar heat gain on treated glass. This is the core function and it's not in dispute. Less solar energy through the window means less heat in the room.
Reduces glare. Immediate, obvious, and the benefit most people actually notice day to day. If staff sit facing windows, this alone often justifies it.
Blocks essentially all UV. Quality film stops the overwhelming majority of ultraviolet, which is the main driver of fading in merchandise, flooring, upholstery, and artwork.
Evens out hot and cold spots. The classic complaint — the desks by the window roast while the interior is cold, so the thermostat can't satisfy anyone. Film narrows that gap, which is often more valuable than the energy saving itself.
What "saves X% on energy" leaves out
Those numbers are real for the buildings they were measured in. Whether they're real for yours depends on things nobody can know from an ad:
- How much glass you have, and which way it faces. A west-facing glass frontage is the best case in the world. North-facing windows in a mostly-solid building are the worst.
- What the glass already is. Modern low-E double glazing already rejects a lot of solar heat, so the film has less left to improve. Old single-pane glass is where film shines.
- How your HVAC is set up and controlled. Savings show up as reduced cooling load; if the system was already oversized, comfort improves more than the bill does.
- Your climate and your hours. Missouri summers make a strong case. A building empty all afternoon makes a weaker one.
There's also a winter trade-off worth naming: film that rejects solar heat rejects it in January too, when you might have wanted it. In a cooling-dominated building that's a rounding error, but it's real and most sellers don't mention it.
Where it clearly pays
- West- and south-facing glass on an occupied building
- Single-pane or older glazing
- Offices where people work facing windows
- Retail with merchandise in daylight
- Any space where the comfort complaints are already a standing joke
Where it doesn't
North elevations, buildings that are already high-performance glazed, spaces nobody occupies during peak sun, and any window where the real problem is the HVAC rather than the glass. We'd rather tell you which of your elevations are worth doing and which aren't than film the whole building.
The honest way to evaluate it
Walk the building at 2pm on a hot day and note where it's uncomfortable. That's your answer, and it's more reliable than any percentage. Then treat those elevations first.
